Vision 2030 โ€” No Mahram Required

Women's DIY Umrah Guide 2026

Complete guidance for American Muslim women planning solo or group independent Umrah. Safe, empowering, and spiritually transformative.

No Mahram Required โ€” Confirmed Policy

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 reforms have officially removed the Mahram (male guardian) requirement for women of all ages wishing to perform Umrah independently. American women can apply for the Saudi tourist e-visa, travel solo, and perform Umrah with complete legal authorization and safety. Thousands of American and international women successfully complete solo DIY Umrah annually.

Women's Visa & Entry Requirements

Saudi Tourist e-Visa

Apply independently at visa.visitsaudi.com using your US passport. No Mahram's name or details required. The visa application is straightforward and approval typically comes within 24โ€“72 hours.

No Age Restriction

Women of all ages โ€” from young adults to elderly โ€” can obtain the tourist visa and perform Umrah independently under the current Saudi policy.

Travel Insurance

Obtain comprehensive travel insurance before departure. This is included with the e-visa in many cases but verify your coverage includes medical emergency and repatriation.

Solo or Group

You can travel entirely alone or join other women for certain portions of the journey. Many women's Umrah groups and Facebook communities connect American Muslim women traveling in similar periods.

Women's Ihram & Ritual Guidance

Ihram Clothing

Wear modest, loose-fitting clothing covering the entire body except face and hands. Any color is acceptable โ€” white is not required. Your regular hijab and modest clothing qualifies as female Ihram.

No Niqab in Ihram State

While in Ihram, women should not cover the face with a niqab (face veil). If you regularly wear niqab, you can use a specially designed wide-brimmed hat or hold a cloth near your face without it touching.

No Gloves in Ihram State

Gloves are not permitted while in the state of Ihram. Ensure your hands remain uncovered during your Tawaf and Sa'i.

Halq/Taqsir

Women perform Taqsir only โ€” trimming approximately one inch (fingertip length) from the ends of hair. This is done privately and does not require shaving.

Menstruation

If menstruating upon arrival, you may enter Ihram, say Talbiyah, and perform all Umrah rituals EXCEPT Tawaf and Sa'i โ€” these require ritual purity. Wait until your period ends, perform Ghusl, then complete Tawaf and Sa'i. Inform your accommodation of potential schedule flexibility.

Safety & Practical Tips for Women

Accommodation Safety

Book reputable hotels with 24-hour reception. Zone 2 Makkah hotels and Markazia Madinah hotels are well-monitored and safe for solo female travelers.

Rawdah Access

Women have dedicated times and entrances for the Rawdah. Book via Nusuk app. Women-only sections are managed efficiently and respectfully.

Transport Safety

Use only Uber or Careem โ€” never informal/unofficial taxis. Both apps show driver information, route tracking, and allow ride sharing with other women.

Travel Community

Connect with other American Muslim women traveling for Umrah through Facebook groups, Islamic forums, and community centers. Many women coordinate dates for mutual support.

Emergency Contacts

Save the US Embassy Riyadh number (+966-11-488-3800) and your hotel's emergency line in your phone. Share your itinerary with family at home.

Dress Code in Cities

Outside of Ihram state, Saudi Arabia is quite accommodating to visiting Muslim women. Dress modestly with hijab throughout your stay. The Kingdom's cities are welcoming and generally safe.

๐ŸŒน

"And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the journey."

โ€” Quran 3:97

This obligation belongs equally to Muslim women. Your journey to the House of Allah ๏ทป is valid, blessed, and deeply encouraged.
